sharper millinery blog

Sally has been interested in sculpture, fabric technology, textiles and mixed media throughout her creative career so far. The need to invest in materials that are unusual or to change the surface quality ensures that work has both quirky and unusual elements.

Her education began with a focus on 3D and sculpture at school, then a great leap to study textiles and surface pattern at college and to continue to specialise in Embroidery (Combining print and fashion) at University. All elements of her education have added to her need to create works and individual pieces to mirror her personality and to convey her feelings.

She continued creating her designs after University, working in conjunction with many agencies creating designs for wallpapers and soft furnishing. Many were sold to New York buyers with great responses from other buyers that allowed for further commissions.

There was also a desire to create individual works for exhibitions and this came in the form of accessories - bags, jewellery and body adornments. They were received very well and commissions arose to create similar works.

After several years of working within education as a community artist, she realised her need to be inspired once more and embarked on an MA in Fashion and textile design. While on the course she discovered that all of her ideas, knowledge and skill could be directed to a new area of study. With this in mind her love of millinery was born, she was able to experiment with many new shapes and sizes, materials and techniques.

She now creates hats, head sculptures, hair corsages, pins and broaches, which are created on a commission bases for many clients. Alongside her millinery, drawings, collages, embroideries and prints convey her initial ideas for headwear and are displayed alongside the final headwear to convey initial thoughts on size, shape, colour and accessories.
